MOON GRAMOPHONE cực-cực kỳ-kỳ vui mừng đem đến một buổi tối âm nhạc từ ba nghệ sỹ/nhóm nhạc tuyệt vời – tất cả đều liên quan đến Việt Nam theo một cách nào đó – và quan trọng hơn, tất cả đều hoạt động trong vùng giao điểm của ‘cấp tiến’ và ‘thực chất’. Wow. 

Chương trình bao gồm lần xuất hiện và buổi biểu diễn đầu tiên ở Việt Nam của nghệ sỹ guitar nổi tiếng Canada gốc Việt (và sống ở Montreal) THISQUIETARMY (Eric Quách). Tiếp nối truyền thống quái đản của The Onion Cellar / Moon Gramophone trong việc khám phá những tài năng mới và những cái tên không được quan tâm đúng mức, cũng như dành cho họ những cơ hội cần thiết để khẳng định mình, chúng tôi giới thiệu buổi trình diễn live đầu tiên của SOUND AWAKENER (Nguyễn Hồng Nhung). Và mở màn là bộ đôi âm nhạc mới của Hà Nội gồm Eliza Lomas và Brett Zweiman: giọng ca mơ màng và các lớp sơn synthesizer tung tóe và các beat nhạc hơi hướng thổ dân chắc nịch – một tràng pháo tay ảo (nhưng không ảo theo-nghĩa-đó) cho GLITTER TROFF, please.

THISQUIETARMY 

"Một đĩa nhạc u ám, nhưng lẩn khuất dưới tầng tầng lớp lớp bùn-âm-thanh có chút hơi hướng ma-quái là những giai điệu ảnh hưởng của pop đang chờ được khám phá… Một đường hầm đen tối, nhưng luôn le lói ánh sáng đâu đó đằng xa."

THISQUIETARMY (TQA) là dự án solo của nghệ sỹ Canada gốc Việt Eric Quách (cựu thành viên nhóm post-rock DESTROYALLDREAMERS). 

“Tùy vào xuất xứ của mỗi cây bút phê bình, nhạc của THISQUIETARMY từng được gọi là post-rock, krautrock, atmospheric metal, drone, ambient, sound art, nhạc ứng tấu thử nghiệm, shoegaze, và, thỉnh thoảng, gothic. 

Việc những ảnh hưởng này có thể dễ được nhận thấy như vậy nói lên hai điều: một, chúng mang đến đặc điểm riêng biệt về âm thanh của từng đĩa nhạc, hai: TQA không ngại đem vào âm nhạc của mình những ảnh hưởng này, nhưng đây không phải là một sự sao chép đơn thuần.

TQA còn phát triển thành một ‘hãng đĩa’ quốc tế có tiếng tăm, phát hành các album của Eric Quách cũng như của những người bạn nghệ sỹ của anh [dự án ambient / dream-pop huyền thoại lovesliescrushing, hay cặp vợ chồng chơi drone Nadja]. Trong cùng một khoảng thời gian, từ vô danh (theo nghĩa ồ-lại-nữa-lại-một-gã-chơi-guitar-cùng-mấy-cái-looping-pedal) Eric xuất hiện trên bìa các tạp chí âm nhạc hàng đầu. 

Tuyệt vời nhất, chỉ với 5 album tính đến hiện tại, Eric đã có một catalogue nhạc mới mẻ và phiêu lưu hơn nhiều những gì nhiều nghệ sỹ cả đời làm được.. Mỗi album là một khuôn nền để Eric Quách đem vào những yếu tố tưởng như hoàn toàn trái ngược nhau, qua đó tạo ra hàng loạt hiệu ứng âm thanh kỳ diệu.”

SOUND AWAKENER 

“Từ khi bắt đầu xuất hiện trên Internet năm ngoái, âm nhạc của nghệ sỹ trẻ dưới tên Sound Awakener (Nhung Nguyễn) dần được biết đến ở nhiều nơi trên khắp thế giới. Là thành viên của một cộng đồng nhạc thử-nghiệm đang phát triển ở Việt Nam, Nhung đã có những bước tiến đáng kể chỉ qua một vài năm. Phát hành đầu tiên, Shape of Illusion, thu âm năm 2011, bao gồm các đoạn piano và lập trình MIDI ngắn ảnh hưởng rõ rệt bởi quá trình tập nhạc cổ điển từ nhỏ… 

So sánh tuyển tập đó với đĩa nhạc mới ra mắt, September Traveler. Gồm các sáng tác thực hiện chỉ sau Shape of Illusion một năm, September Traveler (phát hành online qua bandcamp và dưới dạng CD đi kèm một tập sách ảnh [và một triển lãm] của nghệ sỹ Tây Ban Nha Irene Cruz) ám ảnh và đẹp mộng mị, với tiếng piano lẩn khuất sau các màn hiệu ứng âm thanh và những tiếng rền đầy tính nhạc. Một sự trưởng thành vượt bậc của Sound Awakener. Và nếu trang Soundcloud của cô có thể nói lên điều gì, Nhung sẽ còn tiến xa..

..Một trong những từ có phần khó hiểu đã được dùng để miêu tả SOUND AWAKENER là ‘đen tối’ – dù ta có thể phần nào hiểu được điều này khi những yếu tố ầm-ĩ trong âm nhạc của Nhung xuất hiện, các sáng tác này, với người viết, là một sự thanh thoát có thể đi kèm các bộ phim của Stan Brakhage hay Harry Smith.”

GLITTER TROFF

Giọng ca mơ màng và các lớp sơn synthesizer tung tóe và các beat nhạc hơi hướng thổ dân chắc nịch. GLITTER TROFF là dự án âm nhạc của Eliza Lomas, một trong những cá nhân đằng sau CAMA, ra đời khi cô quyết định hát (truyền cảm hứng bởi giọng ca kỳ diệu của những Colleen hay Grouper), trên nền nhạc đồng sáng tác cùng Brett Zweiman (nghệ sỹ chơi-nhiều-nhạc-cụ tài năng điều hành các chương trình chơi nhạc ứng tấu tự do với đủ các thử nghiệm điên-điên dưới tên A Night of Clutter). Nếu đoạn giới thiệu này đang làm bạn nghĩ đến một cô ca sỹ Canada với những sở thích kỳ-kỳ về màu tóc, bạn yên tâm, bộ đôi Hà Nội này của chúng ta có lẽ sẽ còn quái và tươi mới hơn thế.

MOON GRAMOPHONE is chuffed to bits to present this evening of out-there music from some wonderful artists – who all happen to share a tie with Vietnam, in one way or another, and – who, more importantly, all truly operate within the eye-shaped intersection of ‘boundary-pushing’ and ‘unpretentiousness’. Wow.

The event sees the first ever Vietnam-appearance (literally) from world-renowned Montreal-based Vietnamese Canadian guitar-artist THISQUIETARMY (Eric Quach). Continuing to abuse The Onion Cellar’s / Moon Gramophone’s creepy knack for talent-scouting and giving unknown names and underdogs much-needed platforms for showcasing what they are capable of, we'll also bring you the first ever SOUND AWAKENER live set from Hanoian youngster Nhung Nguyễn. Opening the proceedings will be the new duo of Eliza Lomas and Brett Zweiman: dreamy vocals and splattered synths and mean massive tribal beats – a cyber-round of applause to welcome GLITTER TROFF, por favor.

"This album is kinda doomy with a poppy element. It's completely draped in sludge and fuzz but beneath the walls of filth are melodies crawling into your ears… Dark shimmery drone stuff with a hint of evil but you can always see the light at the end of the tunnel."

THISQUIETARMY (TQA) is the solo project of Canadian Eric Quach (formerly member of the instrumental post rock outfit DESTROYALLDREAMERS). 

“TQA has, depending on the critic's personal background, been described as post-rock, krautrock, atmospheric metal, drone, ambient, sound art, experimental improvisation, shoegaze and, although to a lesser extent, gothic. The frankness with which these influences are laid bare indicates that not only are they are vital in terms of providing each work in question a unique and recognisable sound design, but that their point is neither post-modernist pastiche nor mere imitation.

Not only has Quach built up an impressive international infrastructure for his oeuvre, establishing his TQA-imprint as a respected outlet for his own material and that of a wide range of befriended artists [legendary ambient / dream-pop project lovesliescrushing, or husband/wife drone duo Nadja]; not merely has he made it from the anonymity of yet-another-guitar-and-looping-pedal-artist to the covers of leading printzines.

Most remarkably, he has created, just five entries into his album-discography, a catalogue that feels more adventurous and explorative than a lifetime's work of others… The album for Quach, one could say, constitutes a framework within which seemingly disparate elements can be bound together and juxtaposed to fantastical effect.”

SOUND AWAKENER 

“The work of this young sound artist — released under the name Sound Awakener — has been slowly spreading across the planet since she started releasing her work online in 2014. A member of a growing experimental music scene in Vietnam, Nhung’s music has evolved rapidly in a few short years. Her first release, Shape of Illusion, was made up of short piano and MIDI-programmed pieces recorded in 2011 and very much informed by her upbringing learning classical fare...

Contrast that with her most recent effort, September Traveler. Recorded just a year after Shape of Illusion, the album (available digitally and on CD accompanying a book of photos [and an exhibition] by Spanish artist Irene Cruz) sounds ghostly and beautiful, with her piano playing often hidden under layers of effects and complemented by swirling drones and melodies. It’s a huge leap forward. And she’s showing evidence of moving even further beyond it if the music on her Soundcloud page is any indication.

..One of the more confounding descriptors that have accompanied Nhung’s work so far is the word “dark.” While I can hear underpinnings of that when her noisy side comes out, her compositions feel much more ethereal and weightless to me. The dreamlike quality that would work well soundtracking a film by Stan Brakhage or Harry Smith.”

GLITTER TROFF

Dreamy vocals and splattered synths and mean massive tribal beats. GLITTER TROFF is what happens when CAMA co-proprietor Eliza Lomas, infatuated by her love for enchanting songstresses the likes of Colleen and Grouper, decides to sing, backed by multi-instrumentalist Brett Zweiman (the artist behind the Night of Clutter strand dedicated to improv-music and all manners of crazy experiments). If all this is making you think of a certain Canadian singer with a penchant for weird hair colours, let us assure you that our Hanoi-based duo is potentially even more out-there, and all the more refreshing for that.
