BEETHOVEN's SYMPHONY No.5

Nhà hát Giao hưởng Nhạc Vũ kịch Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (HBSO) sẽ trở lại biểu diễn từ ngày 13 tháng 6.

Còn gì tuyệt vời hơn khi chương trình đầu tiên của năm biểu diễn Giao hưởng Số 5 và Overture Coriolan của Beethoven, và Concerto cho 2 Piano giọng Mi giáng Trưởng của Mozart. Buổi biểu diễn được chỉ huy bởi Nhạc trưởng Trần Vương Thạch. 

Coriolan Overture của Beethoven được công diễn vào năm 1807 khi Beethoven 37 tuổi. Tác phẩm này là phần mở màn cho một vở kịch sân khấu. Vở kịch này được công diễn 5 năm trước đó, tuy nhiên, đã được dựng lại nhằm giới thiệu overture mới của Beethoven. 

Nội dung của vở kịch dựa trên bi kịch Coriolanus của Shakespeare, với phần kết được chỉnh sửa. Cả hai đều nói về một vị tướng La Mã, theo phe kẻ thù vì ông phản đối sự ảnh hưởng của dân thường, những người bình dân. 

Đây không phải là vở kịch tiêu biểu của Shakespeare, vậy nên phiên bản tiếng Đức vẫn chưa được trình diễn cho đến hiện tại. Tuy nhiên, overture tuyệt vời của Beethoven lại được biểu diễn thường xuyên. Có đến 6 bản ghi âm của nhạc trưởng nổi tiếng Toscanini. Tác phẩm dài khoảng 8 phút.

Concerto cho 2 Piano giọng Mi giáng Trưởng được viết năm 1779 khi Mozart 23 tuổi. Phần dàn nhạc trong tác phẩm này ít nổi bật hơn bình thường nhằm tôn lên phần giai điệu của 2 cây piano độc tấu. Concerto gồm 3 chương, chương 1 và chương 3 nhanh và đầy năng lượng, tương phản chương 2 với phần giai điệu chậm dãi và ám ảnh. 

Hai nghệ sĩ độc tấu cho chương trình là Nguyễn Thùy Yên và Phạm Nguyễn Anh Vũ. Nghệ sĩ Thùy Yên hiện là Phó Khoa Piano và nghệ sĩ Anh Vũ là Giảng viên của Nhạc Viện TP.HCM.

Bản Giao hưởng Số 5 được diễn lần đầu vào Tháng 12 năm 1808 trong một chương trình đặc biệt kéo dài 4 giờ. Cả chương trình chỉ dành riêng để biểu diễn âm nhạc của Beethoven. Bản Concerto cho Piano số 4 (với nghệ sĩ độc tấu là Beethoven) và Bản Giao hưởng số 6 “Đồng Quê” cũng được biểu diễn đêm đó. 

Một nhà phê bình nổi tiếng đã viết về Bản Giao hưởng số 5 như “những tia sáng rực rỡ soi sáng màn đêm sâu thẳm, và chúng ta nhận ra những cái bóng khổng lồ di chuyển qua lại, đến gần và phá hủy mọi thứ trong chúng ta, ngoại trừ nỗi đau từ sự chờ đợi bất tận.” Dù sao, tác phẩm này vẫn là bản giao hưởng nổi tiếng nhất, với tên gọi “Bản Giao hưởng Định mệnh”.

Tiểu thuyết gia người Anh E.M. Forster bắt đầu Chương 5 của cuốn tiểu thuyết Howards End như sau: Chúng ta phải thừa nhận rằng Bản giao hưởng Số 5 của Beethoven là những thanh âm tuyệt vời nhất mà mỗi người có thể nghe được.”

Không thể phù hợp hơn cho đêm mở đầu sự trở lại của HBSO sau một khoảng thời gian dài ngưng nghỉ đầy nuối tiếc nhưng cần thiết nhất. Buổi biểu diễn hứa hẹn chào đón rất nhiều khán giả.

Among the best possible news is that the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet, Symphony Orchestra and Opera [HBSO] is resuming concerts from June 13.

What better to start the new era than Beethoven’s magnificent Symphony Number 5, his titanic Coriolan Overture, and Mozart’s beautiful Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat, all conducted by the HBSO’s music director Tran Vuong Thach?

Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture was premiered in 1807 when Beethoven was 37. It’s a musical introduction to a stage play. The play had been premiered five years earlier but was revived for a single performance specifically to present Beethoven’s new overture.

The play was based on Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus, albeit with a slightly different ending. Both plays deal with a semi-mythical Roman general who sided with Rome’s enemies because of his hatred for the influence of the common people, the plebeians.

It’s not one of Shakepeare’s better plays, and the German version is never performed today. But Beethoven’s wonderful overture is frequently performed, and there are even six recordings of it by the famous conductor Toscanini. It lasts for eight minutes.

Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat was written in 1779 when Mozart was 23. The two pianos are equal in importance, with the orchestra less powerful than usual to allow for the presence of two solo instruments. The work is in three movements, as is usual for concertos, the first and third fast and energetic, the second languid and hauntingly melodic.

The two soloists will be Nguyen Thuy Yen and Pham Nguyen Anh Vu. Yen is currently deputy head of the piano department at the Saigon Conservatory, where Vu is a lecturer.

Beethoven’s Symphony Number 5 could hardly be better known or more striking. It was premiered in December 1808 in an extraordinary concert that lasted four hours. It was entirely devoted to music by Beethoven and included both the Piano Concerto Number 4 (with Beethoven as soloist) and his Symphony Number 6, the “Pastoral’. It was, reportedly, extremely cold.

An eminent critic wrote of the 5th symphony “Radiant beams shoot through this region’s deep night, and we become aware of gigantic shadows which, rocking back and forth, close in on us and destroy everything within us except the pain of endless longing.” It remains, nonetheless, the most popular symphony ever written, and has been called the “Symphony of Fate”.

The English novelist E.M. Forster begins Chapter 5 of his 1910 novel Howards End as follows: “It will be generally admitted that Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is the most sublime music that has ever penetrated into the ear of man.”

At a concert performance his character Helen imagines dancing goblins and unearthly terror. She perceives an escalating disquiet in the third movement, even though that movement’s Trio is described as reminiscent of a dancing elephant (echoing the thoughts of the composer Hector Berlioz).

 All in all, this concert could not be more suitable for the opening night of the HBSO’s return from a most unfortunate, but necessary, period of silence. It deserves a very large attendance.
