Drowning by Numbers là một bộ phim Anh-Hà Lan năm 1988 do Peter Greenaway đạo diễn. Bộ phim đã được trao giải Best Artistic Contribution (giải dành cho phim có đóng góp nghệ thuật xuất sắc nhất) tại LHP Cannes ngay trong năm 1988.

Cốt truyện của bộ phim xoay quanh ba người phụ nữ đã lập gia đình - người bà, con gái và cháu gái của bà - cả ba người đều có tên là Cissie Colpitts. Theo diễn tiến của câu truyện thì từng người phụ nữ đã lần lượt dìm chết chồng mình. Ba nhân vật Cissie Colpittses do ba diễn viên Joan Plowright, Juliet Stevenson và Joely Richardson thủ vai, diễn viên Bernard Hill vào vai một nhân viên điều tra tên là Madgett, người đã bao che cho cả ba vụ án.

Cấu trúc của bộ phim gồm ba câu chuyện tương tự, lặp đi lặp lại, gợi nhớ về một câu truyện cổ mà cụ thể là "The Billy Goats Gruff", vì Madgett luôn được hứa hẹn những phần thưởng lớn từ Cissies nếu ông che dấu tội ác cho họ. Các liên kết được tiếp nối và củng cố bởi Smut - con trai của Madgett, người đã thuật lại các luật chơi lạ lùng mà trong đó, các nhân vật hành động như thể nó là tín ngưỡng cổ xưa. Rất nhiều trò chơi đã được sáng tạo riêng cho bộ phim này.

The film's plot centres on three married women — a grandmother, her daughter, and her niece  — each named Cissie Colpitts. As the story progresses, each woman successively drowns her husband.

The structure, with similar stories repeated three times, is reminiscent of a fairy tale,  most specifically 'The Billy Goats Gruff',  because Madgett is constantly promised greater rewards as he tries his luck with each of the Cissies in turn. The link to folklore is further established by Madgett's son Smut, who recites the rules of various unusual games played by the characters as if they were ancient traditions. Many of these games are invented for the film.

In Drowning by Numbers, number-counting, the rules of games and the repetitions of the plot are all devices which emphasize structure and symmetry. Through the course of the film each of the numbers 1 to 100 appear, the large majority in sequence, often seen in the background, sometimes spoken by the characters.

On Greenaway's specific instructions, the film's musical score by Michael Nyman  is entirely based on themes from the slow movement of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in E flat, bars 58 to 61 of which are heard in their original form immediately after each drowning.
